Former President Goodluck Jonathan’s Co-ordinating Minister for
the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. (Mrs.) Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has
joined the list of the administration’s officials who have landed
high-flying international jobs.
The first set of appointees who landed in jobs at the international
arena were former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr.
Akinwumi Adesina who is now the new President of the African Development
Bank (AfDB) and immediate past Director-General of the Securities and
Exchange Commission (SEC), Arunma Oteh, who had been appointed Vice
President and Treasurer of the World Bank.
Former President Jonathan two weeks ago while congratulating his
former appointees for their well-deserved appointments at the world
level declared that their recognition was a testimony to the fact that
his administration’s economic team remains one of the best in terms of
the members’ ability to proffer solutions to 21st Century challenges in a
veiled response to criticisms by supporters of the current President
Muhammadu Buhari’s claims that Jonathan’s men were bereft of ideas and
drove the economy to the precipice.
Now, Okonjo-Iweala, who was the chairman of that economic team, has
accepted two key international appointments, the first is to serve as
chair of the 28-member board of the Global Alliance for Vaccines and
Immunisation (GAVI), an international public-private partnership
committed to saving the lives of children and protecting people’s health
by improving access to immunisation in developing countries, including
Nigeria and the second as Senior Adviser, Lazzard, a 167 years old
global investment firm.
The cherry news concerning the former minister comes as her alma
mater, the World Bank where she once served as Managing Director,
equally announced the appointment of a new Country Director for Nigeria
and Co-ordinating Director for its integrated programmes for the West
African Region, Mr. Rachid Benmessaoud, who is to succeed Francoise
Marie-Nelly whose tenure ended in July 2015.
