The porous state of security at the nation’s airports was once more
exposed on Wednesday when a 25-year-old man was found inside the tire
compartment of a Ghana-bound Medview Airlines plane at the Murtala
Muhammed Airport, Lagos.
According to eye witnesses, the stowaway was discovered by the pilot
during his final check on the plane before its departure to Accra,
Ghana.
The incident reportedly happened at the departure wing of the MMA2 at about 7.30pm.
The identity of the young man could not be ascertained but as of the
time of publishing this report, he had already been handed over to the
Airport Command of the Nigerian Police where he is being interrogated.
The young man during interrogations, reportedly informed police
investigators that he was frustrated with the situation in the country
and wanted to leave for greener pastures.
In response to how he managed to beat airport security and find his
way to the tire compartment of the plane, the stowaway said he jumped
the perimeter fence of the airport to gain access into the MMA2 tarmac.
Efforts to get the reaction of the spokesman for the NPF, Airport
Command, Mr. Alabi Joseph, were unsuccessful while the airline involved
is yet to issue a statement on the incident.
