Bukola Elemide popularly called Asa was born in Paris, France in 1982 to Nigerian parents. Asa is a female Nigerian Singer-Songwriter and recording artiste.
Asa in Yoruba means “Hawk”
She was two years old when her family relocated from Paris to Lagos in Nigeria where she grew up.
At the age of twelve Asa’s mother sent her to Corona one of the best schools in Nigeria where she had five years of bitter education with the stress of Lagos.
Asa was an introvert; she would lock herself up in her room for hours listening to the music of Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadqi and Lauryn Hill.
At 18 she got herself on a few radio talent shows and secretly signed up for the Peter King’s School of Music where she learned to play guitar in 6 months.
In 2002 Asa returned to Paris and by 2004 she met her manager and friend Janet who introduced her to Cobhams Emmanuel Asuquo, who became her musical partner and producer.
Her first single was Eiye Adaba, then jailer. She later signed unto the Naïve Label. Partnered by Cobhams and Christophe Dupouy she produced her first album, Asha.
Asa won the prestigious French Costantin Award in 2008 as “Best Fresh Talent”. She won the award out of 10 singers and group selected by a 19 music specialists in Paris.
Her second album was released in October 2010 titled imperfection.
Asa was inspired by Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Raphael Saadiqi, Lauryn Hill, Femi Kuti, Angelique Kidjo, Marvin Gaye, Bob Marley, Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey.
