First Bank Nigeria is currently rated the third biggest bank in Nigeria. It was established in 1894, making it the first bank in Nigeria.
It was founded by Alfred Lewis Jones as Bank of British West Africa.
In 1957, Bank of British West Africa changed its name to Bank of West Africa (BWA) and in 1965, it was acquired by Standard Bank and the name of the Bank was changed to Standard Bank of West Africa after acquisition, and in 1969 it became the Standard Bank of Nigeria, It became listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange in 1971 and in 1979 the name was changed to First Bank Nigeria.
The London branch commenced operation in 1982 and was converted into a subsidiary in 2002.
First Bank Nigeria has branches in United Kingdom, Paris, South Africa and China and across the whole 36 states in Nigeria including the Federal Capital Territory. The Headquarters is located in Lagos.
The bank whose total assets is $18.6 billion (N2.9 trillion) and profit after tax as at September 30 2011 is approximately $270.2 million (N42.2 billion) has a total of 8,557 employees.
