Five Lawmakers Impeach Kogi Speaker
Category: Kogi News
There was confusion in Kogi yesterday after five lawmakers in a 20-member house sat and purportedly removed the Speaker, Honourable Momoh Jimoh, his deputy Aliyu Akuh and Majority Leader, Kolawole Matthew.
The lawmakers announced Umar Imam as the new Speaker of the House. Umar, later pledged his support for the new Executive of the state in his acceptance speech.
Friday Sanni, who briefed journalists about the impeachment, said the Speaker was impeached for not carrying other members of the House along in the affairs of the House.
He also claimed that since the new Governor, Yahaya Bello and the Speaker are both from the same senatorial district, the Speaker should vacate the seat.
Though only five of the members were seen leaving the chamber, but Sani claimed due process was followed in the impeachment of the Speaker , insisting that 15 members signed the impeachment notice a day before and that the House formed a quorum of ‘seven’ yesterday to ratified the process. According to him: “What is needed in impeaching a speaker starts with collation of signatures and I can assure you that 15 of the 20 members, which is more than 2/3 signed for his impeachment.”
Meanwhile, 15 members of the House who were seen at Hon. Jimoh’s residence insist Hon. Jimoh remains the Speaker and that their signature was forged to perfect the impeachment.
The embattled Speaker, who survived two previous impeachment attempts, dismissed the purported impeachment, describing it as a “Kangaroo’ arrangement that cannot pass under a sane atmosphere.”
Meanwhile the Umar Imam leadership adjourned till March 2 for sitting, the Momoh Jimoh Lawal said they will return to the House tomorrow to continue their legislative duties.
