Six Kano Students Dies in Autocrash
Six students of Karaye Unity School and Kano Kapital School, a driver and coordinator of a national quiz competition in Kano State, on Tuesday, lost their lives in an auto crash at Iroko, on the Ibadan-Oyo Expressway.
According to a statement signed by the deputy governor, who also doubles as the state Commissioner for Education, Professor Hafiz Abubakar, the state government on Wednesday, in Kano, said the deceased students were on their way back to the state from Lagos, where they had represented the state at a national quiz competition.
“On behalf of His Excellency the Executive Governor of Kano State, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, his deputy and Commissioner for Education, Professor Hafiz Abubakar condoles with the families of the students who were involved in an accident on Tuesday, on the Ibadan-Oyo Expressway while on a mission to represent Kano in the National Quiz Competition in Lagos.
“Information available indicated that three students of Unity School, Karaye and three from Kano Kapital, as well as a driver and coordinator of the competition lost their lives in the accident,” the statement said.
He also disclosed that the state government was making arrangements for airlifting of their corpses to the state for interment.
“Meanwhile, families of the affected students have been duly informed about the unfortunate incident and the arrangements. “May Allah grant the souls of the deceased Jannatul Firdausi and those who sustained injuries speedy recovery,” the state government said.
In a related development, the Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, pledged that he would pay the bills of the eight surviving Kano students involved in a motor accident at Iroko, on the Ibadan-Oyo Expressway, on Tuesday.
Ajimobi made the pledge on Wednesday in Ibadan, when he visited the victims at the Emergency Unit of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
He told newsmen that the students had travelled from Kano to Lagos on an excursion but had a ghastly motor accident at Iroko near Fiditi while returning to Kano.
Ajimobi said seven of the students reportedly died on the spot, while nine others were brought to the emergency unit of UCH.
“One of the nine brought into the hospital is dead, remaining eight at present receiving treatment. I am here to visit them as a parent, who cares.
“These are our children, whom we must always care for and I am assuring you that we will take care of the bills,” the governor said.
“I just spoke to the governor of Kano State, Governor Umar Ganduje, he is one of our good friends and I have assured him that they will be taken care of at UCH,’’ he said.
Similarly, Dr Temitope Alonge, the Chief Medical Director (CMD), UCH, had assured the governor that they would give their best at making the patients get back on their feet.
He said six of the eight survivors were relatively stable, adding that two of them were in the protocol care unit.
“In the next three hours, we will swing into action to ensure that those in the protocol care unit regain their stability, so that by next week all of them could return back to their destination,” he said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) gathered that the Kano State government had already sent an aircraft to Ibadan to convey the corpses of the deceased students.
