Hundreds of Shiite Members Storm NASS Over Continued Detention Of Leader
Hundreds of members of the Shiite Islamic Movement of Nigeria, IMN, yesterday, stormed the National Assembly to protest the continued detention of their leader, Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
The protesters, led by the secretary of the academic forum in Nigeria, Abdullahi Musa, said they had gathered to know the position of the Senate regarding the continued detention of their leader as well as ascertain when he would be released.
According to him, the group was at the National Assembly to know what the Senate will do and if government was planning any action regarding their members. He alleged that several of their members had been killed by security operatives in different parts of the country.
“They killed our members and government has been silent. We want to know what their position is,” Musa said. An application for El-Zakzaky’s bail by his lawyer, Femi Falana, is expected to be determined by an Abuja Division of the Federal High Court today. The protesting Shiite members, who were received by the Divisional Crimes Officer at the National Assembly, Frances Anebi, were, however, asked to remain calm.
