Politician Detained For Campaigning Against House Of Reps Member in Katsina

The Chairman, Katsina State chapter of the National Conscience Party, Mallam Abdulmumini Sani, has taken ill in police custody where he is being detained on criminal defamation allegation.

Sani, who had been in detention since October 26, 2017, told journalists on Sunday that following his complaints of ill health, he was taken to the police clinic last Thursday where he was given some drugs which he paid for.

The NCP chieftain complained that he had been having bouts of fever and dizzying spells due to the adverse effect of the drugs.

He said, “My fears are that my body has started to react to the drugs making me to, at times, feel feverish and dizzy. You know, I once had an accident during which my right lung was affected then.

“I have a strong suspicion that the drugs given to me at the clinic could have started having negative effects on the lungs.

“Also, look at where I am being detained when I’m not a criminal, all  because I am championing the anti-corruption crusade of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

Sani’s troubles started when he wrote a letter dated August 27, 2017 to a House of Representatives member representing Katsina Central, Sani Aliyu Danlami, demanding probity in the  execution of projects inherited from Danlami’s predecessor in office, Sheikh Abubakar, who died shortly after the 2015 general elections.

The letter also raised questions concerning Danlami’s age and his WASSCE/NECO certificate.

Danlami reportedly asked Sani to withdraw the said letter, and also demanded a public apology, insisting that his letter was defamatory.

It was learnt that Sani refused to accede to his demands, prompting Danlami to institute a suit against the NCP chieftain before Chief Magistrate Nurudeen El-Ladan who directed the police to investigate the allegations against Sani.

The matter has been slated for Thursday.

Sani revealed that the national headquarters of his party had already got across to him over the issue.

The state police spokesman, DSP Gambo Isah, claimed ignorance of Sani’s detention.

“I’m not aware of his detention but I will investigate and let you know the outcome,” he said.
