Be Watchful! What Happened To Your Father Can Happen To You

Category: City Pastor's Teachings

Refer to the post on Abraham's sojourn in Philistine with his wife Sarah. Recall, Abraham had lied about his relationship with Sarah, claiming she was his sister and Abimelech, King of Philistine had taking her, before God appeared to him in a dream and warned him about the calamities that would befall him and his kingdom if he touched the woman.

Now, after several years, Isaac, the son and heir of Abraham was also in a sojourn to Philistine and just like his father had lied about his relationship with his wife, Rebekah. He was afraid that the people would kill him and take his beautiful wife and so he lied that she was his sister, just like his father did.

[My confusion here is- did he not hear about his father's story how he lied about his wife and same for the new king too, did he not hear about Abraham and what happened with his father and the disaster that would have befall the kingdom for a single instance of taking someone's wife?]

But let's leave my insinuations and focus on what the word of God is saying.

In Genesis 26:8-9, "And it came to pass, when he had been there a long time, that Abimelech king of the Philistines looked out at a window, and saw, and behold, Isaac was sporting with Rebekah his wife. And Abimelech called Isaac, and said, Behold of a surety she is thy wife: and how saidst thou, she is my sister? And Isaac said unto him, because I said, lest I die for her"

And so, just like his father, he had lied to protect himself from being killed.

Genesis 26:10- "And Abimelech said, what is this thou hast done unto us? One of the people might lightly have lien with thy wife, and thou shouldest have brought guiltiness upon us."

One thing to note here is that this king has integrity and knows the repercussion of sleeping with another man's wife. And yet in this generation, it so easy for people to sleep another man's wife, even the so-called men of God!

Abimelech immediately decreed that anyone who touches Isaac ort his wife be put to death.

There's just a slight difference from that of Abraham whose wife was already taken by the king (though had not been slept with).

But it is so similar, both men had sojourned in Philistine and had lied about their wives being their sisters.

If it was something bad that had happened to Abraham, it could have happened to Isaac too. This is why as Christians or Believers, we must always strive to break every generational curses, any sin that our father had committed, we must try by all means to break ourselves and our children away from such curses.'

If you read from verse 12 of Genesis 26, Isaac prospered in Philistine just like his dad-Abraham did.

Praise God!
