Arrest, Detention Of Two Rivers LG Chairmen Illegal, Act Of Desperation By Mbu, Says APC
Category: Nigerian National News
The Rivers State chapter of All Progressives Congress (APC) has kicked
against the continued detention of the chairman of Khana local
government area, Chief Gregory Nwidam, and his Gokana local government
area, Hon. Deemua Ledee Deemua, by the state police Command.
This is as the police late Tuesday night released on bail, Deemua, with
an order to report to the state police headquarters on daily basis.
The two council chairmen were invited to the police headquarters in Port Harcourt, on Monday by the Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu,
but were later detained at the Old GRA police station on their alleged
involvement the disruption of the Save Rivers Movement (SRM) rally at
Bori, headquarters of Khana local government area of the state.
The APC, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, however,
flayed the arrest and detention of the two council chairmen, who are
loyalists of Governor Rotimi Amaechi, describing the police action as
illegal and an act of desperation to plunge the state into crisis.
The statement which was signed by the Media Aide to the State interim
Chairman of the party, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, reads in parts; “The Rivers
State Police Command under the watch of CP Joseph Mbu in continuation
of its war against the Rivers State Government and its allies has since
20th January, 2014 arrested and illegally detained two Local Government
Council Chairmen loyal to Governor Chibuike Amaechi for undisclosed
offenses.
“Hon. Gregory Bariledum Nwidam, chairman of Khana local government
Area, and his Gokana counterpart, Hon. Ledee Deemua, were taken into
custody since Monday morning and have been kept incommunicado since
then. They are being detained at the Police Old Government Reservation
Area, GRA, Divisional Headquarters.
“Both men have been subjected to monumental mental torture after
being subjected to series of interrogations supervised by an assistant
commissioner of police in-charge of Monitoring.
“This to us is yet another evidence of the high-handedness being
displayed by the State Police Command under CP Mbu probably acting on
the directives of their Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) partners in their
desperation to plunge Rivers State into unprecedented crisis.
“The arrest and detention of Hon. Nwidam and Hon. Deemua is without
justification. As if that is not bad enough, they have been held beyond
the 24 hours prescribed by the Nigerian Constitution while attempts are
being made to find a crime to hang on their necks.
“This is condemnable. We, therefore, call for the immediate release
of these gentlemen whose only crime is their support for democracy and
Government of Rivers State within 24 hours or we may be forced to draw
the attention of the National Assembly on this illegality. CP Mbu should
be ashamed that his evil acts are about causing IGP Abubakar his job”.
Meanwhile, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. Ahmad
Mohammad confirmed that Deemua was released from detention on Wednesday.
