A father, 54-year has died after he was shot by police who tried to stop him yesterday as he stabbed his 11-year-old son and then beat him to death with a cricket bat at a crowded suburban sports oval in Australia.
According to report by DailyMail horrified parents and children who were gathered at the ground for evening cricket training watched the 54-year-old man attack his son with a knife.
The boy, a talented cricket player who has been identified as Luke Batty, was believed to have arrived the training session with his mother, when his enraged father turned up at the scene. According to reports, the father was estranged from his son and the boy's mother, who was 'in the vicinity' of the the attack.
The drama unfolded at around 6.30pm yesterday. Police showed up, confronted the man and tried
unsuccessfully to subdue him but when the father turned on them with the knife, one of the officers was forced to shoot him in the chest.
Paramedics tried to save the boy, but he died at the scene from severe head injuries. An emergency services helicopter took the father to the hospital, where he too later died.
The incident has shocked the local community, with one resident describing how 'a shiver' ran down his spine when he heard 'a couple of pops' and realised they were gunshots. Horrified Australians have begun posting tributes to the boy on social media.
