Planned Confab Wasteful Venture – Buhari
Category: Nigerian National News
Can the National Assembly the Federal Government from executing it's plan for National Conference which is will cost the nation about N7billion?
Leadership Reports that former military head of state and leader of the All Progressives
Congress (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the planned
national conference, describing it as an attempt to waste the nation’s
hard earned resources.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, shortly after he registered at
the Babban Gida polling unit of Sarkin Yara ‘A’ ward in Daura, at the
ongoing membership registration of the APC, General Buhari urged the
presidency to allow the National Assembly performed its constitutional
roles rather than mull the confab.
“I have been consistently against the national conference. Firstly,
the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as I understand,
gives room and the right to the National Assembly, the upper and the
lower house to initiate the change or the amendments of the
constitution.
“Now can we afford seven billion which was not in the budget to be
used for a national conference when there is an institution, the
National Assembly, which is constitutionally empowered to do it? Do we
have the resources for that luxury?”
“Personally, I am not for the national conference. It is the duty of
the National Assembly, it is in place and it is capable of doing it, let
it do it and let us save resources for other things,” he added.
The APC leader also faulted 2015 election time table recently
released by INEC and advocated the conduct of all elections in one day
as a means to discourage rigging.
“If this election is conducted in one day, anyone who wants to snatch
ballot box or bring thugs will not be able to do it because the
election is holding the same day. There will be no time for anyone to
plan any bad thing. This country can afford to conduct all elections the
same day and we hope they will do that,” he said.
General Buhari, who received the APC membership card with number
01000001 Kat/Dau, urged Nigerians to join the party en masse, as it was
the only viable alternative to the misrule of PDP.
He insisted that the nation was at a critical stage of its democratic development demanding the participation of all.
