Assassins Gun Down an APC Leader in Rivers State

The interim Chairman of All Progressives Congress (APC) for
Ward 9 in Umuogerem Obibi, Etche in Etche Local Government Area of
Rivers State, Mr. Chimezie Anucha, was shot dead by assassins on
Sunday, April 6, 2014.
The incident happened between 7 and 8am at Achara Obibi area of the state.
According to report, Mr Chimezie who was also Chairman of Community
Development Committee (CDC) of Obibi community had received a phone call
asking him to come to Achara for a business deal. He was on his way,
when he had a flat tyre and while trying to replace it, the assassins
stormed the scene after they reportedly got information that he was in
town.
They tried to take him away but he resisted which angered the
killers. They then fired several shots at his neck, killing him on the
spot.
A source however disclosed that before his killing, Chimezie had
alleged that some members of the opposition party in the area were
threatening to kill him.
Meanwhile, the people of Obibi are alleging that his assassination
was politically motivated, saying that members of the opposition party
in the area had been uncomfortable since he emerged CDC Chairman. They
were said to be complaining bitterly that the position(CDC Chairman)
gave him much powers, which he could use against the interest of their
party.
According to a young man who pleaded anonymity, “We are afraid now.
Nobody knows the next target. This is political. Some people are even
leaving the area now.”
The victim, who was in his early 40s, left behind a wife, three children and an aged mother.
Investigation into his murder has commenced.
