Abuja Police Commissioner, Mbu, refuses to vacate Port Harcourt official residence for successor
Category: Nigerian National News
Four months after his redeployment from the Rivers State Police
Command, the Commissioner of Police in Abuja, Joseph Mbu, is yet to
vacate his Port Harcourt official quarters for his successor, Johnson
Ogunsakin, PREMIUM TIMES has leant.
Mr. Mbu was redeployed from Rivers State on February 6 after several
controversies and alleged involvement in the politics of the state.
His role in the politics and violence in Rivers State has been
condemned by several Nigerians including the National Assembly and the
opposition All Progressives Congress, APC.
The official quarters, a white duplex located at No. 24 Force Avenue,
Port Harcourt, is reserved for the state’s serving Commissioner of
Police.
While Mr. Ogunsakin squats at the Assistant Inspector General of
Police quarters, his predecessor, Mr. Mbu guards the duplex with 15
police officers from the Abuja command, sources in the state told
PREMIUM TIMES.
The police guards also have at their disposal an FCT command black Hilux van.
Efforts by PREMIUM TIMES to ask Mr. Mbu why he has not vacated the
official residence were unsuccessful as he did not answer calls or
respond to text messages sent to his phone.
The Abuja police spokesperson, Altine Daniel, also declined comment on the matter saying it was not a “national matter.”
Mr. Ogunsakin could also not be reached on his mobile telephone.
He however responded to a text message enquiry, saying his
predecessor’s refusal to vacate the official quarters for him is a
non-issue.
“It’s not important,” Mr. Ogunsakin said in response to our enquiry.
Mr. Mbu has continued to court controversy since arriving Abuja, particularly in his handling of protests.
He recently announced a controversial ban on all #BringBackOurGirls
protests in the Nigerian capital, a ban that was widely condemned.
The police headquarters however later overruled him, saying it never ordered such a ban.
