FIFA Releases New World Ranking

Football governing body, FIFA, has released its latest monthly ranking.

According to the latest ranking posted on FIFA website early this morning, Nigeria’s Super Eagles are ranked 44th in the world and 6th in Africa.

This means the coach Stephen Keshi led Eagles will head into the 2014 World Cup tournament starting on 12 June as the lowest ranked team in Group F as all Nigeria’s opponents are ranked above.
South American power house, Argentina are ranked 5th, Bosnia and Herzegovina are in the 21st position while Asian representatives, Iran are ranked 43rd in the world.

The Super Eagles got to 44th in the world and sixth in Africa in the last edition of the ranking.
Nigeria polled a total of 640 points and will be looking at gathering more points to rise up on the log.

FIFA statement informed that results of international friendly games up to May 30 were put into consideration for the ranking, which cuts across 67 friendly matches plus continental qualifiers in CAF (26 matches), the AFC (16) and CONCACAF (3).

It could be recalled that the Super Eagles played 2-2 and 0-0 draws in their last two friendly matches againstScotland and Greece respectively.

Meanwhile, Algeria is now the highest ranked African team, moving up three places to now place 22nd in the world.

Côte d’Ivoire slumped down to two places to 23rd and 2nd in Africa, while Egypt, who will not be at the World Cup went down twelve places to 36th in the world.

In the overall ranking, Brazil steadily found its way to third position with Spain and Germany unchallenged in the first and second positions respectively.

Argentina and Switzerland moved two places up to fifth and sixth positions respectively on the log.
The next ranking would be made after the World Cup tournament in Brazil,which ends 13 July.
