University Of Lagos Officials Announce Reversal Of Student Fees Amid Continued Protests
The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has immediately
pronounced a reversal of the hiked fees for course registration, and
other charges, described as “obnoxious” by the protesting students this
Friday morning.
The Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic & Research, Prof. Babajide
Alo, who addressed the students as they occupied the senate building,
also directed that the imposition of various charges on students to
register separately for General Studies (GST) courses, be immediately
reversed.
He advised the students who had paid to approach their faculty officers with teller evidence for a refund.
Prof. Alo pronounced that the increased charges from N10, 000 for
late registration of courses, to N25, 000, are also immediately
reversed. He added that the registration portals, which had been shut
down, are now immediately re-opened for students to edit their courses
for examination.
However, some students have said their protest did not include the
demand for reversal of certain forced Insurance services, called T-SHIP,
costing N5, 000 they have said it is also due to be contested.
"Imagine we were forced to pay N5, 000 for a health insurance
service, and they are making us pay that same amount again as the
premium, which policy is done that way? Is that not extortion?" Ask one
of the student leaders who spoke with SaharaReporters .
Although final year students who are graduating in few days did not
fully participate in the protest, some of them told Saharareporters that
they have also been “over-billed” in paying more than N15, 000 to
obtain graduation gowns.
The students began a protest this morning, shutting down the school gates, and all academic activities.
They also occupied the Vice Chancellor's lodge, but he was out.
