Health workers in Kogi State are experiencing different types of stigmatization following a rumour making rounds that an alleged Ebola disease patient was rushed to the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, which the hospital rejected.
As at press time The Guardian gathered that motorcycle riders have shunned passengers whose destination is the Specialist Hospital.
The mere sight of a person in laboratory overall coat is enough criteria to discourage a commercial motorcyclist from picking such passenger.
The worst stigmatization is coming from landlords, who have started issuing quit notices to tenants identified to be health workers.
However, in a swift reaction the Kogi State Ministry of Health in a press statement said the dangerous rumour over Ebola Virus outbreak is not true.
The statement, signed by the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Samuel O. Ihinmikaye, on behalf of the Health commissioner in Lokoja stated that there is no case of Ebola viral hemorrhage fever in Kogi State at the moment.
“There is no Ebola virus patient either brought or admitted to Kogi State Specialist Hospital Lokoja or any hospital in the state as at today August 19th, 2014
“The rumour is therefore baseless, unfounded and should be disregarded forthwith.”
The statement cautioned the public to always clarify any information on Ebola disease with the Epidemiology Division of the State Ministry of Health when in doubt.
The citizens of the State by the press statement were assured of the state government’s commitment to ensuring the state is free from Ebola epidemic even as it appealed to all to contribute their quota in the task.
The Kogi State Commissioner for Information, Hajia Zainab Okino had announced the designation of the State Specialist Hospital as Isolation Centre in case of any reported case of outbreak of the Ebola virus disease in the State after the recent weekly state executive council meeting.
