President Jonathan Disowns Jimi Agbaje!
Category: Lagos News
The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party has ruled
out preferential treatment for any of the 12 aspirants seeking the
party’s ticket for the 2015 governorship election in the state.
The Lagos PDP refuted speculations that an aspirant, Mr. Jimi Agbaje,
had received the backing of the Presidency and was preferred to others.
The party added that it would conduct a fair and transparent primary
election to choose its flag bearer in the governorship race.
Publicity Secretary of Lagos PDP, Taofik Gani, told our correspondent
that in line with the directives by the national leadership of the
party, there was no possibility of any of the aspirants automatically
getting the party’s ticket via endorsement.
Gani, who responded
to speculations that Agbaje was preferred by President Goodluck
Jonathan, said it was false, adding that the President’s endorsement
would not translate to automatic governorship ticket.
He said,
“It is not true that there is any plan to hand over the ticket of Lagos
PDP to any aspirant. The expectation of the national leadership of our
party is that all state chapters must provide a level playing field for
all aspirants. The state Chairman, Tunji Shelle, has also said it over
and over again that there would be fair and transparent primaries for
all positions in Lagos.
“This rumour is being peddled by our
political opponents and their aim is to create acrimony among us. It is
unfortunate that the name of the President has been used again.
President Jonathan has shown that he is democratic and does not get
involved in any matter of the party at the state level. He allows the
most popular aspirant to emerge as the candidate.
“It might be
true that Agbaje is lobbying the Presidency, and that is allowed. But if
at the end of the day, he is lucky to get the support of the President;
that does not also translate to automatic endorsement as governorship
candidate.”
