Saraki a Betrayal?

Category: Nigerian National News

Following the trend in politics, particularly with what is currently going on in the National Assembly, there are wide opinion that Bukola Saraki might have betrayed his party leadership, the APC to emerge the senate president.

First was a reported case, where Saraki reportedly boycotted APC leadership meeting to be chaired by Osinbajo, referring to the just sworn-in Vice president as a "common commissioner"

According to sources, the party leadership called for a meeting on Monday by but was boycotted by Senator Bukola Saraki, one of the party’s top contenders for the presidency of the Senate, who eventually emerged unopposed as the senate president, even while the President of the country, Muhammadu Buhari was in a urgent meeting with the party leaders to decide a concensus candidate for the position of the senate president.

Senator Bukola Saraki reportedly told party leaders that as a former governor he could not attend a meeting summoned by a ‘mere commissioner’, referring to Professor Yemi Osinbajo, whose previous public office was as Commissioner of Justice in Lagos State. Saraki then became a Senator, while Osinbajo is now the Vice President.

Following Saraki’s snub, Prof. Osinbajo didn’t bother to attend the meeting, but the party met with its elected lawmakers, with some of Saraki’s earlier supporters joining the meeting. Sources at the meeting told SaharaReporters that the leaders of the National Working Committee of the APC reaffirmed their support for candidates chosen during Saturday’s mock primaries of the party.

President Buhari had earlier ended a meeting with other G7 presidents to attend the APC party leadership meeting before the inauguration of the 8th Assembly, however, before the end of the meeting, Saraki had emerged the president of the senate and had been sworn in.

A mock election, organised by the leadership of the APC on Saturday, produced Senator Ahmed Lawan(Borno) for the Senate Presidency while Femi Gbajabiamila(Lagos) emerged as the party’s candidate for the election of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Senator Bukola Saraki, who lost to Lawan, and Ibrahim Dogara of the House of Reps, have faulted the process and vowed to go ahead with their bid regardless of the outcome of the ‘primaries’ or the decision of the party.
