Ex- Eagles skipper, Segun Odegbami, has unveiled plans to run for next year’s FIFA presidency.
The man popularly called ‘The Mathematical’ for his analytical
skills, noted that the world’s football governing body needs a new era
of leadership to restore dignity to the sport after recent scandals, and
he fits into that description.
The election to replace Sepp Blatter, the former president of FIFA who quit in June following multi-million dollar corruption allegations against the body, will hold February 26, 2016 in Zurich, Switzerland.
Segun Odegbami wants to become the next FIFA president
According to Africanfootball.com, Odegbami said: “The current scandal at FIFA is the organisation’s worst crisis in its 111 years of existence.
“Moving forward, FIFA thus require a new era of leadership that
can restore the dignity of the noble sport and that of this esteemed
international institution with global followership.
“Times like this call for all concerned members of the global
football family to contribute to the actualization of renewed objectives
for FIFA by electing a deserving and qualified person, with the right
character that can achieve the desired goals and restore confidence and
integrity to the organisation and its activities.
“The world is very interested in who becomes the next President
of FIFA, considering the present image and state of this institution and
I see myself fitting into this role.”
The ex-international won 46 caps and scored 23 goals for Nigeria,
including two goals to hand Nigeria her first Africa Nations Cup triumph
in 1980.
Odegbami has until October 26 to formally present his nomination,
alongside other supporting documents, through the Nigeria Football
Federation to FIFA.
If he succeeds with his ambition, he will become the first African to
hold the exalted post of the world’s most powerful football governing
body.
The Nigerian legend also recently expressed confidence in the ability
of Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh to succeed with the national side.
