According to Michael Adeniyi the chairman of the Landlords of Ejigun-Agbede, at around 1 a.m., some other landlords in the area woke him up to inform him that a man had been killed by some touts in the area.
He said on getting to the place of incidence he noticed that the man who laid down dead was one of the vigilantes employed by the community to guard the area.
Michael Adeniyi said two vigilantes were attacked by some touts led by one Raji Kamoni and the vigilante was shot in his chest while the other escaped.
However the vigilante who was shot and reported dead eventually did not die and had been hospitalized in the hospital.
According to Segun Adisa the case was later reported at the Sango Police station and the suspects were arrested but within 5 minutes were arraigned before a court, however the case was dismissed by the court and the suspects were set free.
Speaking to one of the vigilantes, the one who was said to have been shot and being treated in the hospital, Elder John Esho, 56-year old said on the fateful day he was patrolling the streets as usual with his colleague when they came across one Raji Kamoni and a lady at around 3 a.m.
He said before then there had been a call-out for the arrest of one Raji Kamoni by the community and the police. He said when they sighted Kamoni, they quickly told him that they were just on their business and that they weren’t there to interfere with him.
Elder John Esho claimed that Kamoni Raji who was in the company of a lady prevented them from continuing their patrol and immediately began to attack him and his colleague
He said while Raji attacked his colleague he tried to stop them but the lady in the company of Raji pounced on him, attacking him with a wood. He said before they realized it, there were many others who came from within the bush and joined in the attack.
John Esho said he was shot with a gun and they started to drag him towards a house while his other colleague escaped. He said he was beaten severely and he later passed out.
Narrating her own part of the incidence, Iya Afin Ade Shinyan, 45-year old and resident of Ejigun-Agbede called for help from Nigerians to intervene in what she said have been happening in the community for over ten years.
She said some younger landlords including Raji Kamoni who she claimed was deported from another village had been terrorizing the community for over ten years, using police to arrest them and their husbands over land disputes.
She said, “We met Kamoni beating Esho, and before we could come to his aide he had passed out because the number of the attackers outnumbered those of us trying to rescue him”
She said the younger landlords wanted to secure their own guards and that was the cause of the disputes. She claimed they have influence with the police and usually use the police to oppress them from time to time. She said there at times when their husbands would be arrested and detained by police for over two weeks.
The women of the community said Raji Kamoni has phone numbers of various police officers and he was said to be a police informant.
Raji Kamoni responding to the various allegations particularly on the attack that almost took the life of John Esho denied all the allegations, he said the vigilantes particularly John Esho are thieves and that he would have reported them long ago to the police but that Oba Adeniyi
Michael begged him not to report them.
He said it was true that he fought with the vigilantes that night because they came to disturb his peace in his house. He however there was no gun shot and that he has no gun and that everything was fabricated by the vigilantes and the community leaders.
The 29-year old man said he had written several letters to the State commissioner of police reporting the activities of the vigilantes in the village but his letters had not been treated.
Kamoni said on the 24th of March 2012 the vigilantes were arrested by the police with guns and other dangerous arms. He said in September 2011 he was attacked in his house by some of the vigilantes particularly Michael Esho and they threaten to kill him.
The presenter of the program, Segun Adisa accused Kamoni of joblessness; he said it is only jobless people that act as informant for the police!
Kamoni who said his job is to monitor construction sites for people building houses in Ejigun-Agbede said he studied Physics Education at the University of Ibadan.
