I couldn’t bring anything out of the shop; even what I am wearing now is borrowed”

The Imo state indigene said he is helpless and does not presently have any means of livelihood since after the fire outbreak.

He told Labe Orun, “I sleep outside because there’s no money to sustain life; business is closed, everything is gone!”

Asked how the fire incidence happened, Innocent describes the incidence as shocking, saying that by the time he arrived the house after being informed of the fire at the Park, five houses had already gone down in ashes, he said he met people gathered there watching and when he arrived the scene, but suddenly a black and white colored cat came out of the smoke.

“Someone said the cat was lucky, that in spite of the fire that burnt everything down, it came out alive, that God must have saved it” he explained, “But someone else, a Hausa boy, said that a cat like that would be a spiritual cat, that they should kill it”

He said after they killed it, another person came and carried the dead cat and “I asked if the cat is more important than the things I lost. I was angry because of all the things I lost, including five hundred and fifteen thousand naira cash”

“I took the cat and burnt it, but the cat did not burn, then I used a knife and cut it, and inside the cat were a box and a small calabash which I showed to the people who had gathered. And I said if this cat is the cause of this place that burnt, God must surely punish whosoever was behind it”

Another witness of the incidence, Alhaja Mojisola Jamiu said that on day of incidence she was in her place where I sell woods.

“I was eating when people came to inform me that something was burning. When I went outside, I saw fire everywhere, I called for help to put the fire off, but it was only my children that were around and so we couldn’t put the fire off.”

After the fire went out a cat came out of the smoke, then some people said the cat should not be killed, but one small Hausa boy said, it was a spiritual cat and should be killed.

“When the cat heard the conversation, it tried to escape” she explained, “But it was chased and caught and killed. The cat was burned for several hours, when they couldn’t burn it, the shop owner cut open the cat and found inside it, a white knife, and many other things”

She added that five houses got burnt and further explained that she informed one Daka, a neighbor who escalate the matter and informed the landlady, Iya Shakira.

When Iya Shakira heard what happened she took the items found on the cat and wrapped it inside her wrapper that she would travel with it to Benin to show to her parents.

“That was how we reported the case to the police” Alahaja Mojisola said, “When police questioned her as to why she was going to show it to her parents, when the village has a king and elders who could help solve the matter”. She said the landlady could not give any good reasons.

Another witness, Daka said he went for a meeting at Badagry when the incident occurred, that by the time he got back everything was already burnt down.

“When the cat came out of the burnt houses and it was killed, I didn’t read any meaning to it, until the next day when I was told that the cat was burnt for over five hours and when it was slit open, they found inside it, “Ado”, a white knife, small calabash and “tira”.

He further explained that when “Alahaja Shakira (Landlady) came back, she said she would take the items found in the cat away, but people stopped her, but she held on to the items and tried to escape to Benin with it, I stopped her at the Park and called police to arrest her”.

When she was arrested by the police, they questioned her to know why she wanted to take the items found on the cat away, she said she was going to show it to her parents because it was strange to her, that she had never seen a thing like that before.

Daka informed Segun Adisa that an “Alfa” told him after the incidence about the cat, how before now, the landlady had been using it has an instrument for taking revenge on people. He cited an example of a former tenant, one Alhaja that sells food who the landlady once used the cat to attack before the woman packed from the house.

The cat ate the Alhaja’s food and she threatened to kill it, but the landlady warned her not to kill the cat. Shortly after, the food seller became very sick and was admitted in a hospital where nails and pins were removed from her legs during a surgery. How the items entered her body still remains mysterious.

Unfortunately the residents did not hear of the food seller’s story until after the incidence of burnt houses and the killed cat with mysterious items inside it. The Alfa testified to it, that the cat is an evil instrument used by the landlady to punish ailing tenants.

On her own part, Alhaja Shakira said she was at her shop when she heard that her house was burning, she said she fainted on sighting the scene of incidence, five of her houses were burnt down.

She said in all her life, she had never experienced such a thing as that, she gave the same details as the other witnesses but insisted that she wanted to take the items found on the cat to her parents because it was strange to her.
