The Lagos State- Land Grabbers (Omo Onile) Task Force members are taking from The Nigerian Police, NSDC, Lawyers and others who are empowered by the Lagos State Government to intervene, arrest and prosecute offenders of the law.

Though Omo Onile, or family from which land is purchased is allowed to be paid some amount of money (Token) agreed with a buyer of land before the purchase and payment of land. But they are not allowed to use force to take money from owner of building, or workers at the site.

I have always been of the opinion on this land-grabbing issues that even if Omo Onile should be paid any money, it should have originally been part of the money for the land, so that land buyers are charged the "omo onile" fees from the time of paying for the land, this will enable them to know if they can buy the land or not. It is not okay for buyers to bear the burden of having to pay additional monies they did not plan for.

However, on no grounds should anyone under the disguise of Omo Onile or family, take a land already paid for from the owner, and sell to another person, or while a land owner is developing his site, interrupts construction, all in the name of "monies for omo onile". Sometimes these so-called "omo oniles" which some are not even Lagos Indegenes beat up or even kill land owners because of money.

To stop the menace caused by Land Grabbers (Omo Onile), Lagos State government has passed into law, bills to prohibit the act and punishment for offenders who forcefully enters and illegally occupy landed properties, and often causing violence while doing this. It is therefore now a criminal matter for Land Grabbers (Omo Onile) to forcefully take money or land from people building in Lagos.

If found guilty by the provisions of the bill, land grabbers, popularly known as “Omo Oniles or Ajagungbales’, will face a maximum 21years and minimum of five years imprisonment respectively if convicted.

There are also various fine impositions for individuals or groups convicted of the offence.

The bill provides for prohibition of forceful land take over, entry by force, illegal occupation of property, use of land agents, illegal use of Law enforcement agents, encroaching with a weapon, sales of property without authority and professional misconduct among others with their attendant punishments as regards the particular offence.
