Kogi State



Kogi state is one of the states in the north-central part of Nigeria popularly called the Confluence state because of the meeting point of River Niger and River Benue at Lokoja the state capital of Kogi state.

Lokoja is the first administrative capital of the modern day Nigeria about 2 hours’ drive from Abuja, the nation’s capital.

Kogi state was created on August 27, 1991 from Benue and Kwara states. The state has an area of 29,833sq/km with population of about 5 million people.


The major ethnic groups in the state are: Igala, Okun and Ebira while the minority groups are: Nupe, Gwari, Kakanda, Oworo, Ogori- Magongo and Eggan.

Kogi state government house known as the Lord Luggard House was where the first governor general of Nigeria- Lord Luggard had his administrative office. It is located in the Government Reserved Area of Lokoja, the state capital.

The major means of occupation of the people of Kogi state is Government service and agriculture.

Agricultural resources of the state include:

Coffee, cocoa, palm oil, cashew, peanuts, maize, cassava, yam, rice and melon.

The state is also blessed with some mineral resources including:

Coal, limestone, iron, petroleum, and tin.

The largest iron and steel industry in Nigeria is built in Ajaokuta known as Ajaokuta Steel Company. Kogi also housed one of the largest cement factories in Africa, the Obajana cement factory.

Kogi State has a state university located at Ayangba, known as Kogi State University, Ayingba, Ahmadu Bello University College of Agriculture located at Kabba, Kogi State Polytechnic in Lokoja, Federal Polytechnic Idah, Federal College of Education, Okene, College of Education, Ankpa and others.

Since the creation of Kogi state in 1991, the state had four military administrators, and three elected civilian governors.

Local governments in Kogi State include:

Adavi, Ajaokuta, Ankpa, Bassa, Dekina, Ibaji, Idah, Igalamela Odolu, Ijumu, Kabba/Bunnu, Kogi, Lokoja, Mopa-Muro, Ofu, Ogori/Magongo, Okehi, Okene, Olamaboro, Yagba East, Yagba West.
