Police information available reveals that Badoo members usually meet at the herbalist's shrine to swear an oath of secrecy before going on their deadly operations in the Ikorodu area of Lagos.

The commissioner of police who did not allow the suspect to be questioned by journalists said, the Badoo suspects arrested last week named the herbalist, Fatai Adebayo as an accomplice and led the team to the shrine. He also informed that the kingpin of the group had also been arrested.

According to him, “Over the weekend, we had far-reaching achievements in the fight against these killers in Ikorodu, who some people call Badoo. The head of the group has been arrested. We arrested him on waterways as he was escaping. All the suspects are with us.

“One of them confessed that before they go for any killing, the head of the group would take them to the herbalist to swear an oath and get the stones they use for their killings. According to him, they don’t go for any killing without taking the oaths in the shrine. The herbalist is an accomplice.

“I can assure the people of Ikorodu and Lagosians at large that we will not rest until this evil is completely rooted out of Lagos State.”

Some online users have questioned why the suspect was smiling during his arrest in a picture circulating online, however we gathered that the suspect smiled when he was told by the police to hold one of the grinding stones recovered from the shrine.

He protested that he was not involved in ritual killings, saying, “I don’t understand English, but the stones are used for grinding peppers and herbs.”

His wife and mother were said to have burst into tears as the herbalist was taken away by the police. They both claimed that Adebayo is just a herbalist and not a thief and he does not kill. According to them, he usually prepares charms for sick people, and those seeking jobs and business prosperity. They said the stones are used for grinding herbs, claiming his wife also assist him to grind.

Punch reports that when the police commissioner visited the Imosan traditional ruler, Chief Tajudeen Muili, to inform him of Adebayo’s arrest.

That the monarch requested that he be allowed to speak to the suspect on the alleged offence that he was arrested for, however, the police commissioner turned down the request, saying investigations were ongoing.

The shrine, which reportedly has some ritual items, including grinding stones, small gourds, rosaries, and bottles of different sizes containing ground substances have been destroyed by the police team.

According to NAN findings, Badoo members carried no guns or machetes. Their weapons are primarily stones, preferably household grinding stones and mortar, clubs and pestle. They carried out their operations by sneaking into targets’ homes at night and smash their heads with grinding stones or mortars, then collect their blood with handkerchiefs, which were sold for ritual purposes.

Unofficial sources say more than 30 persons were sent to their early graves while Badoo reign of horror lasted.
