Fifth UK Coronavirus Death Confirmed

A fifth person has died from coronavirus in the UK just hours after another patient in his 70s passed away.




The latest victim, also in their 70s, was being treated at St Helier Hospital, in Carshalton, Sutton, London.



The fatality comes after the number of coronavirus cases in the UK shot up to 321.

Daniel Elkeles, chief executive for Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust, said: "We can confirm that sadly, a patient in their seventies who was very unwell with a number of significant and long-term health conditions has passed away at St Helier Hospital.


"They had tested positive for Covid-19.

"Our thoughts and condolences remain with the patient's family and loved ones at this difficult time."

Professor Chris Whitty, Chief Medical Officer for England, also confirmed the death.

He said: "I am very sorry to report a fifth patient in England who tested positive for COVID-19 has sadly died.

"I offer my sincere condolences to their family and friends and ask that their privacy is respected.
