Giorgio Armani Donates $1.4M to Tackle Coronavirus
Milan-based designer Giorgio Armani has donated $1.4 million to help tackle Italy's coronavirus outbreak.
It comes as the health system in the Lombardy region of northern Italy is said to be 'a step away from collapse' as intensive care facilities come under enormous pressure and the death toll from COVID-19 continues to rise.
Armani donated the money to three Milan-based hospitals as well as Rome's Spallanzani hospital and the Civil Protection Agency, a company spokeswoman said on Monday.
As of Monday night, 460 people in Italy have died and more than 9,000 have been infected.
The country, the hardest hit in Europe, has been placed in lockdown with Italian premier Giuseppe Conte issuing a government decree requiring the public to show a genuine need to travel outside the areas where they live.
Schools, universities, theaters, cinemas, and nightclubs are closed with religious and sporting events suspended or postponed. Restaurants and bars may remain open but only between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.
The majority of Armani's employees in Milan are working from home and its production sites are operating with as few people as possible.
