Registered nurse Ana Wilkinson, who had been treating coronavirus-stricken patients in New York and most recently in Texas, wrote on Instagram that she’s been fighting the virus and urged the public to wear masks.
“I wanted to share that healthcare workers get SICK. We take care of the public, and yes, we get sick. We are human. But if we get sick, who is going to take care of your families?” Wilkinson wrote.
“As more and more healthcare get ill or even die, we feel frustrated, tired, and discouraged. All we ask is for you to wear your mask.”⠀⠀
Wilkinson, who is based in San Diego, California, tested negative on Dec. 13 and went back to work at UC San Diego Medical Center that same Monday.
She got tested again and vaccinated on Dec. 16. She learned a few days later that her Covid results came back positive.
Wilkinson says she doesn’t know how she contracted the virus. She noted that her firefighter husband was possibly exposed at work but that he tested negative.
The nurse told KGTV she will always remember the patients she’s lost and warned that the virus preys on whomever.
“My 23-year-olds, my 25, I say mine because I felt like they were my kids that I tried everything I could to save them. And to a lady who was 32-years-old who died from COVID,” she told the outlet. “That’s what I try to tell people, COVID does not discriminate, age, race, color, anything. It just picks you.”
