Nigerian Activist and Afenifere Secretary, Yinka Odumakin Dies of COVID-19 Complications

Yinka Odumakin, the human rights activist who was also spokesman of Afenifere, Pan-Yoruba sociocultural group, is dead.

He was aged 56.

According to family sources, he died from COVID-19 complications at the Intensive Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), where he has been for a week.

The deceased was said to have been moved to LASUTH from the Infectious Disease Hospital in Yaba, Lagos, when his condition deteriorated.

Odumakin played a key role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) that fought the regime of General Sani Abacha after the annulment of the June 12, 1993 election.

His shocked wife, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin confirmed the death of her husband.

She said he died Sunday at the Intensive Care Unit of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja.

A fellow activist Bunmi Omoseyindemi also confirmed the news.
