The family of slain athlete Agnes Tirop has denounced their daughter’s
marriage to Ibrahim Rotich, the prime suspect in Tirop's murder.
Led by her father Vincent Tirop, the family of Agnes denounced the marriage between their daughter and her coach stating that he never met the man adding that the union between his daughter and Rotich was not formalized.
Mzee Tirop says he has not received dowry in respect to customary law from Rotich who was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa County on Friday, October 15.
The athlete’s father says the suspect made his daughter drop out of school in 2016 prompting him to report to police the incident that was never acted upon.
“This man eloped with my daughter in 2016 when she was in from two at Moi University Secondary School and convinced her to sell a piece of land I bought her in Kesses and Chepkoilel,” Mzee Tirop said adding that the man in question was abusive.
Eveyline Chepng’etich, the sister of the late athlete described the suspect as an abusive and violent man after her sister reached out to her early this week for help after she was allegedly assaulted by Rotich.
“After her race Agnes came back to her house where she was assaulted by this man. He had asked my sister to block her family members and demanded Ksh40,000 which she agreed to give him but he still went ahead and assaulted her in my presence leaving Agnes with a swollen forehead,” she said.
Chepng’etich says her sister had informed her that she intended to go back home to her parents for two weeks and take a break from her partner whom she described as violent.
“Agnes told me she had endured violence in the hands of Emmanuel for a very long time even when they were still living in a rental house and nothing changed after moving into their own compound. My sister would be alive if she would have been away from that man,” a teary Chepng’etich lamented.
