Kuje Prison Attack: Abba Kyari, Others Moved Out Of 'Ruined' Facility After Heavy Bombing By Terrorists

Category: Nigeria News

After the massive attack carried out on Kuje Correctional facility in Abuja by suspected terrorists, many of the inmates at the prison have escaped.

Some of the inmates, after the attack have also been removed from the facility including the suspended deputy commissioner of police, Abba Kyari, who was remanded at the prison by a Federal High Court for drug trafficking.

According to reports, a staff of the prison had informed some media outlets while the attack was ongoing that, “Kuje prison is under massive bomb, armed attack,”.

The Kuje Custodial Centre located in Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory came under attack late Tuesday night apparently to free jailed criminals, despite an earlier warning by the country’s intelligence service.

A prison source told PREMIUM TIMES that the State Security Service had “earlier today (Tuesday)” warned of an impending attack on Kuje prison. The source, however, could not describe the level of measures put in place to forestall the attack.

According to a Sahara Reporters source;

"The place was completely ruined and all the inmates have left the facility for now, including Abba Kyari,"

"Most of the inmates have escaped from the facility; it is sad. It houses over 700 inmates," another source said.

Dangerous criminals, including apprehended Boko Haram terrorists, are held in the prison, which also houses high profile public officers standing trial or already convicted.

Kuje has a capacity of about 550 but currently detains about 1000 inmates.
