Abuja Hairstylist Arraigned In Court For Stabbing Apprentice

A 28-year-old hairstylist, Chiamaka Nmonye has been docked for allegedly stabbing her apprentice, Joy Jacob with a scissors during an argument over sweeping of her house.

Nmonye of Utako village, Abuja, is charged with causing grievous hurt before the Presiding Judge Mohammed Wakili.

The Prosecution Counsel, Charity Nwosu told the court that, on Nov.2, at about 8:18 p.m, the complainant Joy Jacob of Utako Village, Abuja, reported the matter at Utako Police Station.

Nwosu alleged that, on the same date, while the complainant was sweeping the defendant’s living room, the defendant walked in and told her the room was not properly swept.

She alleged that the defendant pulled the complainant’s hair, which turned the situation into an argument and stabbed the complainant with a scissors.

The prosecution alleged that, Jacob was stabbed on her left arm and behind neck causing severe injury, adding that the complainant was rushed to Wuse General Hospital for treatment.

Nwosu told the court that the sum of N32, 000 was incurred as medical bill at the hospital.

The defendant however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Mr K. Nwafor , counsel to the defendant prayed the court to grant his client bail, citing sec 36(5) of the 1999 constitution as amended and 158 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.

Nwafor told the court that the accused was still presumed innocent until proven guilty and assured the court that the defendant would not jump bail.

The prosecution counsel, however, did not oppose the prayers of the defense counsel further urged the court to use its discretion to grant the defendant bail.

The Presiding Judge, Malam Muhammed Wakili, refused to grant an oral application for bail and ordered that the Defence counsel file a formal application for bail.

The Judge adjourned the matter until Jan.19 for hearing in the bail application.
