Esau

According to the Book of Genesis, Esau was the fraternal twin brother of Jacob (whom God renamed Israel) - the patriarch and founder of the Israelites.

Esau and Jacob were the sons of Isaac and Rebekah, and grandsons of Abraham and Sarah.

The first one was very red at birth and covered with thick hair like a fur coat. So they named him Esau. Then the other twin was born with his hand grasping Esau’s heel. So they named him Jacob. (Gen 25: 25- 26)

As the first born, Esau was entitled to inherit the wealth of his father Isaac after his death. However he sold his birthright to Jacob in exchange for a meal.

Later as teenagers, Esau was liked by their father Isaac, not only because he was a good hunter but he also cooked well. Because of this his father decided to bless him before his death.

But because of the covenant Esau already made with Jacob by selling his birthright over a meal, Jacob stole his blessing. Jacob received all the blessing meant for Esau from their blind father who meant to bless Esau.

The two brothers became great enemies because of this betrayal by Jacob the twin brother of Esau. Jacob fled away from his brother who would have killed him.

Esau later married Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the Hivite and his cousin Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael and sister of Nebaioth.

He had five sons: Eliphaz with Adah, Reul with Mahalath and Jeush, Jalam and Korah with Aholibamah. In Genesis 33, the two brothers, Esau and Jacob settled their dispute.
