Let Me Be!

By Charles Oluyori

Leave me alone just let me be! Can’t you see that you can’t stop me now? You’d always thought you are better and that I can’t live without you. Now that you see that I can thrive alone, you plot to bring me down so that you can say, “Yes I told you that you can’t be without me”. But I am determined more than ever. So, I swirled, like a bird I flew to a far distance away from your fang. Now I watch you from a distance seeing your next move.

You came to me as a friend and a comforter; I took you into my abode. Like nothing has happened I took you in. I gave to you the rights of a host. And you seized everything, devouring my riches like a hungry dog. With snarl on your face, you say to me “You see you can’t be without me now!” And you released your venom on me. With the fear of a strayed goat trapped by a lion, I ran for safety and hid myself in a tomb. I lived among the termites and crickets.

I fed like a puppy without an honor treated like a pet, sometimes like a pest. And I struggled to survive like a pest feeding from the droppings of a fattened bull. And like a baby I nurtured myself to growth learning from the termites, crickets and the bulls.

Every morning you climb on the roof top calling out to those that passed by, “Hey see me, I am rich, and I can give you riches if you will bow down to me” And the people praised you, and sang songs of praise to you. You became proud and arrogant. You say to yourself, I am powerful, I am a king. Everyone must bow to me to get from my riches”

And they worshiped your wealth. You feast with them entertaining them like royal people. Then the storm comes. Your wealth disappears like a field of grain swept off by the force of rising tides of an ocean. Your diners and praise singers ran and you were left with no one to comfort you. Then in your arrogant heart, you say I have been cheated!

I looked towards the hill and saw dews growing on the open field. And a large number of people were dining; they looked like one happy family.

“Hey come in and dine with us, live with us and be our king” They say to me and lifted me up, “he is the one we have been waiting for”. They echoed.

I was dressed in new clothes and a crown was placed on my head.

You watched from where you were standing. Feelings of jealousy swept through you when you saw the glowing gown in which I was dressed. And you said to the people, "Please take me to him, he can't be without me"

Before my presence you trembled with fear. And you bowed yourself to the ground. But I know you will not let me be. So, I am sending you away, far away, somewhere you will not be bothered about me. So that you can let me be.
