The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Capital Territory Command, apprehends an individual for attempting to sell his eight-year-old son for N20 million.

During a press briefing at the command, the FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, announced on Tuesday that Chinana Tali, the father of the son in question, and Pius Aondoakaa were arrested on January 10, 2024, for their involvement in a conspiracy to sell Ushafa Tali.

Detailing the arrest operation, Odumosu explained, "In January 2024, the FCT Command's vigilant intelligence team intercepted a father, Chinana Tali, who collaborated with another individual to trade an eight-year-old boy, claimed to be his son, for the sum of N20 million in the Federal Capital Territory.

"Acting on a tip-off, the suspects were placed under surveillance. Pius Aondoakaa, one of the suspects, seeking a higher bid, rejected N12 million, insisting on N20 million for a 'He-goat,' referring to a male child. He also offered a 'she-goat' (i.e., a girl child) for N15 million. Pius asserted that he had a boy child for sale, and the father intended to use the proceeds to care for his other children."

Providing additional information, Odumosu added, "In light of this, the alleged father, Mr. China Telpesa Solomon Tali, was enticed to Abuja on January 10, 2024, by undercover FCT Intelligence Personnel posing as buyers. An agreement was reached to buy the child for N20 million.

"At a designated location, the undercover personnel, posing as the buyer, received Mr. Chinana Tali and his son. The transaction was completed for N20 million, after which law enforcement officers moved in, arrested the father (Mr. Chinana Tali, 42 years old, from Logo LGA, Benue State), and rescued the eight-year-old boy named Ushafa Tali.

"The accomplice, Pius Aondoakaa, 29 years old, from Logo LGA, Benue State, who conspired with the father, was also apprehended on January 12, 2024. Both suspects belong to the Tiv tribe and hail from the village of R.C.M Abeda Mbadyul in Logo LGA."

Odumosu handed over the suspects to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons for further investigation and prosecution. The boy is set to be reunited with his mother.

In a statement to journalists, the father claimed that financial hardship drove him to make the distressing decision to sell his fourth child for N20 million to support the upbringing of his other children.
