The Federal Government has officially commenced the implementation phase of the $933 million grant generously provided to Nigeria by the Global Fund. This grant is dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, covering the period between 2024 and 2026.

Speaking at the ceremony held in Abuja yesterday, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, highlighted that the grant's scope extends beyond disease control, aiming to fortify and sustain a robust healthcare system. Nigeria stands as the primary beneficiary of the Global Fund's grant during the 2021–2023 implementation periods, having received over $1.2 billion, which includes allocations for addressing the challenges posed by COVID-19.

Pate noted, "The experience gained from investing in health systems, particularly the strengthening of laboratory systems for surveillance, diagnostics, and quality assurance/control, has informed the implementation design for the 2024-2026 period."

He also reported significant achievements, stating that by the end of 2023, more than 87 million nets had been distributed across Nigeria over the last five years with the support of the Global Fund. The collaborative efforts of the Nigerian government, PEPFAR, the Global Fund, and other partners have notably increased the number of individuals diagnosed with HIV and placed on antiretroviral therapy.

Pate concluded by acknowledging the collective successes achieved over the years, attributing them to the combined efforts of governments and various partners in responding to HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria in Nigeria.
