The Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) has issued a caution to residents, especially consumers of fried plantains commonly referred to as "Plantain Chips," regarding unhealthy practices in the processing and frying of the plantains for sale.

This advisory follows the circulation of an online image posted by an eyewitness, revealing a "plantain chips" vendor purportedly incorporating polythene, also known as "rubber," into the hot vegetable oil utilized for frying the plantains. In a released statement, the agency expressed significant apprehension regarding the potential health consequences this could pose to consumers.

The statement declared, "The agency is presently investigating this revelation and will take appropriate measures to safeguard consumers and hold accountable those involved in this hazardous practice.

"In the meantime, the public is encouraged to assist by reporting any unfavourable and illegal practices among sellers of consumable items that could jeopardize the health of consumers to relevant government agencies, including LASCOPA.

"LASCOPA's main office is situated at No 2B, Soji Adepegba Close, off Allen Avenue, Ikeja, with additional offices located within Badagry Local Government Secretariat, Bariga LCDA, Ikorodu Local Government, and Ikoyi-Obalende LCDA.

"The agency can also be reached via email at lascopa@lagosstate.gov.ng or lasgcopa@gmail.com, or through the following phone numbers: 08124993885, 09064323154, and 08092509777."
