Lagos State Arraigns TACHA In Court
Anita Akide, the ex-BBNaija housemate widely known as Tacha, is currently
being charged with disorderly conduct and transforming the Murtala Muhammed
International Airport into a public nuisance.
Tacha made an appearance before a magistrate's court located in the Ogba area of Lagos on Friday. The trial, which had been ongoing quietly for over two years, only came to the attention of the press on the same Friday. The Lagos State Government initiated the criminal proceedings against the TV reality show star.
Tacha faced charges accusing her of instigating chaos during an encounter with health officials and leading fellow passengers to resist these officials at the airport in May 2021. The Lagos State Government filed charges against the former 2019 BBNaija Season 4 housemate on August 3, 2021, citing violations of the state’s public health and broader criminal laws.
She was arraigned in August 2021 and pleaded not guilty to the two counts filed against her. The trial commenced on November 18, 2021, with the prosecution presenting its witnesses. After the prosecution concluded its case, Tacha's legal team filed a no-case submission, asserting that the prosecution failed to provide credible evidence to support its case.
Despite opposition from the prosecution, the magistrate, Folashade Hughes, dismissed the no-case submission, instructing the defendant to enter her defense. Tacha subsequently presented her defense, and both parties were directed to file final written addresses. The hearing for adopting these written addresses and making closing submissions was scheduled for Friday.
However, at the proceeding, the prosecutor, Dare Dada, requested an adjournment, stating that he had received a filing from Tacha's legal team that morning and needed time to respond adequately. Although the magistrate expressed concern over the lengthy requested time, she ultimately agreed to adjourn the hearing until March 14, as requested by the prosecution.
On March 14, it is anticipated that the magistrate will adjourn for judgment after the parties adopt their final written addresses. Tacha faces two counts related to an alleged encounter with health officials at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in May 2021, involving conduct deemed injurious to public health and disorderly behavior leading to resistance against health officials.
