Let Your “Yes” Be “Yes” and Your “No” Be “No”
Swearing and making vows in the name of God or anything else is a sin. Let whatever you say be binding by your words and not by vows. Do everything you say you will do by meaning it, without necessarily making vows or swearing.
I have seen many instances where people swear just to make their words stand before the hearer or listener. Maybe I have been guilty of this in the past when I was not enlightened. This again is why I always emphasize that people should study their bible all the time; it is the only true way of life!
The bible makes it very clear that God does not like people making unnecessary vows, especially vows you cannot keep. It is a sin to swear in the name of God Almighty or anything else for that matter.
The Book of Matthew in Chapter 5 verses 33 to 36 says, “You have also heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not break your vows; you must carry out the vows you make to the Lord. But I say, do not make any vows! Do not say, ‘By heaven! ‘Because heaven is God’s throne. And do not say, ‘By earth! ‘Because the earth is His footstool! And do not say by Jerusalem!’ for Jerusalem is the city of the great king. Do not even say, ‘By my head!’ for you can’t turn one hair white or black. Just say a simple. ‘Yes, I will,’ or ‘No, I won’t’. Anything beyond this is from the evil one” (NLT)
So when you swear and make vows in the name of the Lord it is from the devil. Learn to caution yourself at your utterances in you excitement. It is not only anger that destroys. A Yoruba adage says, “It’s not death that kills but joy that kills”.
When you are excited by something your fiancé did and you want to swear to her or make a vow about you relationship to assure her of your faithfully for her to believe that you would marry her, think twice because the bible says, any vow you make must not be broken, that was in the Old Testament, however Jesus in the New Testament says, you must not even make any vows at all.
If you have made a marriage vow of “Better for worse” then you must keep your vow of “Better for worse”. Don’t make the vow if you know you won’t keep it.
God bless you.
