Kunle Oluomo has been ousted from his position as the Speaker of the Ogun
State House of Assembly. During the Tuesday plenary session, 18 out of the 26
Assembly members voted in favor of Oluomo's impeachment. The charges leading
to his removal include allegations of embezzlement of funds, highhandedness,
and related offenses.
Following the impeachment, Oludaisi Elemide was promptly elected as the new Speaker by the Assembly members. In his inaugural address, the new Speaker appealed for calm among the members, emphasizing that the impeachment was not aimed at the state governor, Dapo Abiodun, as rumored in certain quarters. Elemide asserted that the constitutional rights of the members allowed them to choose their leaders within the House.
The Assembly adjourned plenary for a two-week period, with the new Speaker now in possession of the maze, the symbolic representation of the House's authority.
It is noteworthy that on September 6, 2022, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) arraigned Oluomo before a Federal High Court in Lagos on charges of alleged N2.475bn money laundering. Oluomo, along with three others - Oladapo Samuel, Adeyemo Taiwo, and Adeyanju Nimota Amoke (currently at large), faced 11 counts, including conspiracy, forgery, stealing, and money laundering.
