The Supreme Court has upheld the five-year prison sentence imposed on former House of Representatives member Farouk Lawan by the Court of Appeal. In 2021, Lawan was convicted for accepting a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola, Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.
In a unanimous decision on Friday, a five-member panel affirmed the 2022 judgment of the Court of Appeal, which upheld Lawan's five-year sentence for count three in the three-count charge brought against him in the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory.
Justice John Okoro prepared the lead judgment, but it was delivered on Friday by Justice Tijjani Abubakar. The Supreme Court found Lawan's appeal lacked merit and subsequently dismissed it.
