Renowned Actor JIMI SOLANKE Passes Away

Veteran actor and dramatist, Jimi Solanke, has passed away.

The multifaceted artist, also known for his roles as a singer, poet, and playwright, has passed away today, just 59 days shy of his 82nd birthday. Jimi Solanke, born on July 4, 1942, in Ipara Remo, embarked on his artistic journey as a founding member of the Orisun Theatre Group, established by the renowned Wole Soyinka, in 1961.

Throughout a remarkable career that spanned seven decades, he made significant contributions to the global entertainment industry. From his early appearances on Western Nigeria Television in the 1960s to his participation in international festivals in Senegal and Algeria during the 1970s, he left an enduring legacy across various platforms.

Solanke's versatility was evident in his memorable performances in productions like "Death and the King's Horseman," "Kurunmi," "Kongi's Harvest," "The Divorce," and "Ovaramwen Nogbaisi."

The Oxford Times acclaimed him as a "Talented Nigerian Actor," while the New York Times lauded him as the leading figure in an "Outstanding Ensemble" during a rendition of Wole Soyinka's "Kongi's Harvest."1

Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State is among the first dignitaries to confirm his passing and has also issued a condolence message accordingly.
